About me

My name is Edwin Edelenbos. I am Dutch, I like technology, and I like what it can do for people when it is chosen and built well. That has taken me through nearly two decades of AV, IT, lighting, security and control systems on superyachts, deeper into lighting with Paul Thames, and lately into writing software.

I am a founding partner at Paul Thames, where we provide architectural and decorative LED lighting solutions and displays for superyachts and for buildings on shore, engineered to marine standards. Ready-made ranges, engineered showpieces, and one-off fixtures. This is where most of my week goes.

Lighting was one of the systems I worked on all along, so this is less a new subject than a closer look at one I already knew. It draws on the same things: knowing what an environment does to hardware, knowing what people actually want from a space, and being willing to make the thing rather than specify it and hope. The pieces I like most are the ones nobody sells yet.

My own part of it is lighting system architecture, technical analysis, and turning complicated requirements into something that works on board.

The newer half, and the one that has changed fastest. AI has shortened the distance between an idea and a working thing enough that I now close it myself rather than describing it to someone else, and what comes out is a working tool rather than a demo.

Internal tools that replace a spreadsheet and a habit. Automations that take a recurring job off someone's desk. Applications that do one thing properly. Websites, including this one. I build what I need, and increasingly I build things for other people.

It is less of a change of direction than it looks. Both jobs are the same job. Work out what someone actually needs, then make the thing that does it.

Before Paul Thames and the software, nearly two decades of AV, IT, lighting, security and control systems for the largest superyachts in the world. I know how to design complex multi-room systems, how to get the most out of them, and, just as usefully, where they go wrong and how to avoid it.

Integrator, yard and owner's side. They are not always the same view, and holding all three at once is what let me find answers that worked for everyone involved, rather than the one that suited whoever asked the question.
